"Aila". Nature's fury destroyed many lives on May 25, 2009. A small team from SCOPE visited some areas of the Sunderbans in West Bengal with whatever meagre articles of relief could be arranged, for the local deprived people on May 29. We realised the difference between watching the coverage of the devastation on TV and witnessing it themselves.

One of the first persons we came across in the Sunderbans, Subodh Bera, a resident of Gosaba.
The desolate expression in his face just about seems to sum up the general condition of the people in the Sunderbans today.

The broken river embankments at Masjidbati kheya ghat, Basanti Block, South 24 Parganas. Due to this breakage in the embankments, more than 300 families' homes were completely destroyed.

Water had risen upto the thatched roof of this hut, destroying most of the belongings of the inhabitants.

Water, water, everywhere, not a drop to drink. The mad scramble for drinking water by the Aila-affected people of the Sunderbans continues till dusk. Most of them had to walk for 5 km and then cross the river to get some potable water to carry back home to their families.
